Fleet V & Volunteering

What is Fleet V?

We are the official International Cadet Class Association of Tasmania. We are part of the Australian International Cadet Association. Based at, and in conjunction with, Sandy Bay Sailing Club, we create and manage the annual programme for our sailors, including training and development, regattas and social events. We’re run entirely by volunteers – usually the parents and carers of our young sailors.

Our mission is to promote the sport of sailing among youth, foster a love for the sea, and develop skills in seamanship, sportsmanship, and leadership. We do this by running an International Cadet fleet in Tasmania. Our values are the following:

  1. Safety: Prioritising the well-being of all participants by adhering to the highest safety standards both on and off the water.
  2. Sportsmanship: Demonstrating fairness, respect, and integrity in all interactions and competitions, promoting a positive and supportive environment.
  3. Teamwork: Fostering collaboration and mutual support among members, both in the boat and across the entire fleet and volunteers.
  4. Inclusivity: Ensuring that the class is welcoming and accessible to all, regardless of background, experience, or ability.
  5. Development: Committing to the ongoing education and development of all members, providing opportunities for learning and growth in sailing, seamanship and leadership skills.

Our Committee

Our volunteer committee meets every month to plan and manage the activities of Fleet V. We set the calendar, work with SBSC on coaching, training and racing, help coordinate overseas trips and generally support our kids on their sailing journey.

Our 2024/25 Officers are:

  • President – David McQuillen
  • Treasurer – Tes Ashbolt
  • Secretary – Verity Shugg
  • SBSC Liason – Michael Ashbolt
  • Members – Emma Hooper, Frazer Read, Mat Clougher (Measurer), Kate Smith, Sharon Archer, Emma Birch, Carsten Birch

Volunteering

If you would like to join our committee, please email us on xxxx@xxx.xxx. Aside from the committee, there are plenty of ways to volunteer with SBSC and help out during training and racing events. From helping out in the canteen to making sure our kids are safe out in one of the rescue boats, there’s a role for everyone. Find out more here.
