Learn to Sail Programs
Sailing – a sport, a life skill, a community and a passion. Here at SBSC, we run a comprehensive programme to help youth and families learn to sail. Whether you’re aged 7 or 70, want to sail alone or with someone else we’re here for you.
For kids aged 7-12 who want to sail in a single person boat
Looking for fun, adventure, and new friends? Tackers is the perfect way for 7–12-year-olds to learn to sail in a safe, exciting and supportive environment right here on the Derwent River. No experience needed — just bring your sense of fun and get ready to explore the water in our colourful Optimist dinghies. You’ll be learning skills, playing games and growing your confidence every step of the way. Join the Sandy Bay Sailing Club crew and discover the joy of sailing!

For kids aged 9-17 who want to sail in a two-person boat
Ready to sail and race as a team? The International Cadet is an awesome two-person boat perfect for 9–17 year olds. With our Cadet Learn to Sail Course, you’ll learn the basics of how to sail these boats as either a helm (aged 13-17) or a crew (aged 9-13). You’ll master three sails, work together with a teammate (bring a mate!), and build skills that take you from local races to national and even world events. Whether you’re new to racing or aiming for the podium, Cadets is where the adventure really kicks off. Jump in and sail with us. Completion of Tackers 1 is helpful, but not necessary.
For kids aged 12-17 who want to sail in a teen friendly environment
Out There Sailing is a great introduction to the sport of sailing and the skills required but will still focus on fun with friends. The program provides a wide variety of on water activities that will introduce sailing and, depending on your club, an opportunity to experience stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing and power boating. You will learn skills through exciting exercises and put them to good use in fun, on-water activities.
Adult Learn to Sail
Our adult learn-to-sail courses in stable, easy-to-handle Pacer dinghies are the perfect way to jump in. You’ll learn the ropes (literally!) with experienced instructors in a relaxed, supportive environment on the beautiful Derwent River. Whether you’re after a new hobby, looking to sail with your kids, or just keen to try something different — this is your chance to get on the water, build skills and have fun doing it!
